Greppicante Bolgheri doc

The new winery, Azienda I Greppi, near the village of Castagneto Carducci - Bolgheri, is the result of a journey taken by two families who grew up together.
The Landini family, owners of Viticcio winery, with their wine-making experience decide to join ventures with the Cancellieri-Scaramuzzi family, in the notorious and magical Bolgheri territory, to make a dream come true.
The I Greppi Winery totals 20 hectares, of which 15 were recently planted with high density vineyards. The priciple grape varietals chosen were Cabernet S., Mer., and Cab. Fr.
The winery is located in the Bolgheri doc wine region, which is one of Italy's most esteemed denominations.
The 2004 harvest produced one wine 'Greppicante', an expression of elegance and sheer pleasure.

Greppicante is a mix of grapes derived from a careful selection of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), and Cabernet Franc (10%).

The grapes are picked separately and vinified in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 28° Celsius . The skins are pumped over in order to extract the tannins and color. Maceration, post –fermentation, proceeds for 15 -18 days, at a temperature of 25° Celsius, to aid the beginning of malolactic fermentation which continues in wood barrels where it ages.

Ageing takes places in French and American oak barrels for about 10 months. Subsequently, maturation follows for at least three months in the bottle.

Greppicante - Bolgheri Doc 2006
“If the moon could only sing” a line from the beautiful song by De Gregori, from many years ago. Greppicante , for all its charm , recalls a striking scene from a beautiful mid-summer’s night with a full moon. Concentrated, without over excessiveness or being tiring. From its apperance it has beautiful deep purple colour, with consistence in the glass which gives the thick and regular legs. The first aromas that hit the nose, remind one clearly of juniper and wild berries, pine bark almost resinous, and one can perceive at is core mature blackberries. Captivating taste, where the alchool, acidity et tannins are all in dymanic equilibrium. The finish is persistant which the return of fruit and spices. What better match can there be if no a roasted wild boar, with salsa?

Greppicaia Bolgheri Superiore Doc 2005
Superior in every sense from Il Greppicante, it has the capacity to express all at the same time, strength and refinement. In apperance it is deep dark purple, with a clean consistency in the glass. Notes of mineral overpower on the nose right from very beginning, with some aereation a myriad of flavor composites , such as berry fruits, cocoa, sweet tabacco, coffee, roasted nuts, bay leaf and hints of fresh mints leaves attach the senses. There is great personality in the flavors, with great linear and equilibrium between its parts. The tannins are present, but by no means aggressive, perfectly flavorful. The finish is notably prolonged, with a reminder of soft skined fruits. Tortelli in a thick sauce, Any type of wild fowl perfectly accompany this wine, for any event in which to enjoy without exception.

Greppicante - Bolgheri Doc 2005
For those who see wine as poetry, this Bolgheri Doc 2005 contains much poetry and much lyricism. The ruby clour has slight purple overtones. The body is good. The nose is intriguing, with both its intensity and complexity worthy of appreciation. The fruit flavours range from ripe red cherry to black fig skin, followed by intriguing notes of Maquis, sweet tobacco and liquorice. The palate is clean, linear and balanced. The tannin notes and alcohol-acidity balance are good. The finish is prolonged with a return to a fruit bouquet detectable by the nose.

Greppicaia Bolgheri Superiore Doc 2004
This Greppicaia is a thoroughbred foal, young and still partly to be broken in. However it has the makings of a great champion and we are sure that soon it will give excellent results. An impenetrable ruby colour, full-bodied, with clear legs on the sides of the glass. The nose has woody tones alternating with red currant, bilberry, sour cherry and black fig, followed by vanilla and later overtones of tobacco and iced coffee. The palate is lively, with distinct tannins that are not invasive, freshness and alcoholic warmth. The finish is prolonged with a return to sour cherry and red currant.

Greppicante 2004 Bolgheri doc
This is a good start for Greppicante, a wine new to the Viticcio range, composed of cabernet, sauvignon, cabernet franc and merlot. Admittedly, a few elements still have to be adjusted, especially as regards the taste components, but plainly there are ample margins for evolution. The colour is intense ruby, the bouquet recalls flowers and fruit such as plums, blackberries and blueberries. In addition there is an intriguing background of bosky undergrowth. Vigorous on the palate, with a correctly prolonged aftertaste.

The Bolgheri Superiore doc 'Greppicaia' will be released in January 2007.
